Vermont Assistance For Families Affected By Military Deployment

Families must make many adjustments when a parent is called to active military duty. The following information can help you find the programs and services your family may need.
Child Care Financial Assistance
The Child Care Financial Assistance Program helps eligible families afford child care by paying a portion of their child care costs. It covers care provided for children up to age 13 (up to 19 if the child has special needs). To be eligible, your child must be a U.S. citizen and your family must 1) have an approved service need (or reason) for child care; 2) meet the income guidelines; and 3) live in Vermont. Child Support Services
If you have an existing child support order or need help with a support-related matter, the Office of Child Support (OCS) may be able to help. For more information, click here.
Economic Benefits
Our Economic Services Division (ESD) administers several programs that help individuals and families to meet their basic needs, including:
  • 3SquaresVT helps you stretch your food budget and put three square meals a day on your table. The main program benefit is a monthly payment that supplements your food budget; however, taking part in 3SquaresVT may also make you eligible for free school meals for your children and help with your phone bills. Eligibility is based on household size, countable income, and expenses.
  • Emergency / General Assistance helps you meet your basic needs in an emergency. Individuals and families with low incomes are eligible.

  • Essential Person Program helps cover the cost of having someone live with you and provide essential care—so you can stay in your home. People who are blind, have a disability, or are age 65 and older AND meet the income guidelines are eligible.

  • Fuel Assistance helps pay part of your home heating bills. Eligibility is based on household income and resources.

  • Green Mountain Care provides uninsured Vermonters with access to quality, comprehensive health care coverage at a reasonable cost. Programs include Dr. Dynasaur, Medicaid, Vermont Health Access Plan (VHAP), and Catamount Health. Prescription Assistance is also available for uninsured Vermonters and those with insurance such as Medicare.
  • Phone Assistance offers two programs to help make telephone service more affordable for households with low income: 1) Lifeline Telephone Service Credit helps with the ongoing cost of maintaining phone service by providing a discount of at least $13.00 off your monthly phone bill; and 2) Link-Up Vermont helps with the initial cost of getting phone service connected by providing a discount of up to $30.
  • Reach Up - helps families with children to become self-sufficient by providing cash assistance for basic needs and services that support work. Eligibility is based on income, resources, living expenses, number of family members in the household, and other factors.
